Posted by Keturah Hetrick on June 16, 2016

A legislative aide since May, Daniel Hogenkamp is one of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s most recent hires. The Vermont native, who reports to Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), is also the founder of EasyMeals, a nonprofit that repurposes expiring food products to feed impoverished children in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina.

The startup, which Hogenkamp founded in June 2014, placed fourth in the Carolina Entrepreneurship Challenge and was awarded $1,000 in funding. EasyMeals was also a finalist in a United Way competition to reduce childhood hunger in the Triangle area.

Last summer, Hogenkamp served as a summer analyst at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. He also worked as an organizing fellow for former Sen. Kay Hagan's (D-N.C.) unsuccessful reelection campaign in 2014.

Hogenkamp graduated last month from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in public policy and economics. He was named the school's Athletics Fan of the Year in 2013, which earned him a free trip to South Bend to watch the game again Notre Dame.
