Incoming members of Congress take to Twitter

Posted by Keturah Hetrick on Dec. 3, 2018

Before they take to Congress next month, incoming members are taking to Twitter.

Since Election Day, members-elect have used the social-media platform to send messages thanking voters for their support, wishing constituents-to-be a happy Thanksgiving, and mourning the passing of President George H.W. Bush. But their tweets also hint at their upcoming policy priorities, with dozens of mentions of climate change, gun violence and health-care coverage.

This year's crop of 99 incoming members have tweeted (and tweeted) more than 6,300 times since November 6. Leading the freshman pack are Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), who have sent 631 and 512 tweets, respectively. Democrats Andy Levin (Mich.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.) have also each posted more than 400 tweets since their election less than a month ago.

The freshman class's least-prolific tweeters are Florida Republicans Greg Steube and Vincent Spano, with just two tweets apiece.
