This report provides an overview of judicial decisions concerningthe constitutionality of state-sponsored religious activities in thepublic schools. Particular attention is paid to the Supreme Court'sdecisions regarding state-sponsored prayer and Bible reading and state-sponsoredreligious teaching in the public schools. The purpose of thereport is to clarify the distinction that has been established in thecourts between those state-sponsored activities regarding religion whichare constitutionally permissible and those which violate the First Amendment.
