Organization's Own Description:
This caucus will address long-term, life-threatening health effects of burn pits on veterans while educating Members and staff on the subject.
During the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, burn pits were used as a primary method to dispose of waste and garbage generated on American military bases. Because unlimited items were indiscriminately burned, the burn pits released an array of pollutants, including particulate matter, and known carcinogens. Within months or years after returning from deployment, soldiers exposed to the burn pits suffered from pulmonary issues, insomnia, and cancer. Some of these illnesses have resulted in death.
Since health and scientific studies have been limited, there is insufficient evidence to draw any conclusions regarding the long-term health consequences of exposure to burn pits. We have a long way to go to fully understand the extent to which burn pits are still being used, and whether our service members are being exposed to unnecessary dangers.
