With headquarters at Stoneville, Mississippi, Delta Council is supported and financed by dues-paying members and by counties it represents. Board of Directors are elected by a referendum vote of the members representing the counties and municipalities of the area. Officers, including a president, a minimum of four vice presidents, and a treasurer are nominated by a nominating committee. Their nomination is ratified by the Board of Directors and by the membership of the organization. The staff of Delta Council is hired by the Executive Committee and serves at the pleasure of that committee.
The work of Delta Council is carried on through a comprehensive committee system that represents all phases of the economy in the Delta Region. Every member is provided with the opportunity to serve on one or more committees. These committees study problems, develop alternatives, propose solutions and present their recommendations to the Board of Directors for review and action. Policy statements approved by the Board are made a part of the organization’s program of work. Many of the policies relating to agriculture have been incorporated into legislation at the national level. This is especially true of catfish, cotton, rice, and soybean programs. Recognizing the essential nature of research and the development of new technology, a great deal of effort is focused on the research needs of the Research and Extension Center at Stoneville. The Advisory Research Committee works consistently to make sure the Mississippi State University Research and Extension Center and USDA - Agricultural Research Service are provided with needed funds and facilities. The Research and Extension Center at Stoneville is recognized throughout the entire world for the quality of its work and the high-impact of research which has brought about economic gains for the area, State, and Nation.
Since 1957, the program of work of Delta Council has included a full-time economic and industrial development department. This department, in conjunction with various State, area, and local developmental efforts, strives to help create new job opportunities and attract investments into the area. Delta Council supports partnership growth for the progressive development and enhancement of the entire Delta Region.
