The Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) is a joint municipal authority formed under the “Municipal Authorities Act of 1945”. CATA was first incorporated on May 17, 1974 and then reorganized into its current format on February 5, 1982 by five local municipalities: the Borough of State College and the four surrounding townships: Patton, Ferguson, Harris and College. It was formed for the purpose of providing public transportation services within the the boundaries of its member municipalities. Subsequent agreements with the Borough of Bellefonte, Spring Township, Benner Township and Halfmoon Township have allowed for service extensions to Bellefonte, Pleasant Gap and Stormstown.
