Buchanan LD heads to hospital lobbying organization

Posted by Steve Shapiro on Nov. 18, 2015

A six-year congressional veteran has left Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) to take up residence with the Federation of American Hospitals.

Katie Wise had served as Buchanan's legislative director since late 2014 before taking a job with the FAH, an organization that lobbies the government on behalf of for-profit hospitals. Wise joined the organization this month as vice president of legislation.

Wise started her congressional career in mid-2009 as a staff assistant to former Rep. Mary Fallin (R-Okla.). She became a legislative correspondent for Fallin in 2010 and moved to the office of Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) at the start of 2011 to become a legislative assistant. Wise became a senior legislative assistant for Fitzpatrick a year later, and graduated to his legislative director a year after that. She joined Buchanan's staff in early 2014 as policy director.

In her most recent role, Wise covered health care issues for Buchanan, who sits on the Health Subcommittee on the House Ways and Means Committee. According to their Facebook page, FAH hosted Buchanan in October to discuss issues facing hospitals.

Johnson picks up former environmental lobbyist as new LD

Posted by Steve Shapiro on Nov. 17, 2015

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) is looking to clean things up with his new hire for legislative director.

The congressman brought Arya Hariharan on board this month from environmental advocacy firm, Earthjustice, where she worked as associate legislative counsel since June. She will also be serving as senior legislative counsel for Johnson.

Hariharan graduated from William and Mary's Marshall-Wythe School of Law in 2012 and was the executive editor of the Environmental Law and Policy Review there.

Since receiving her law degree, she has worked as a fellow for D.C.-based public policy firm Civic Enterprises and the American Association for Justice. Hariharan joined the latter in 2013 and lobbied for them on a variety of consumer and safety issues until moving to Earthjustice.

Johnson lists the environment as a key issue and touts his "green voting record" on his congressional website.

Pompeo takes fair and balanced approach to hiring

Posted by Steve Shapiro on Nov. 16, 2015

Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) has welcomed a Fox News family member and former employee of the network onto his staff.

Mary Doocy, daughter of Fox personality Steve Doocy, joined Pompeo in October as a legislative assistant after a brief stint with Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. She also briefly served with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee as a summer law clerk in 2014.

Mary Doocy will be covering social, religion and defense issues for the congressman.

Steve Doocy co-hosts Fox's morning talk show, "Fox & Friends." His son, Peter Doocy, also works for Fox News, joining the media organization in 2009 and becoming an on-air personality shortly thereafter. In 2012, Mary Doocy joined her father and brother at Fox News as a guest relations coordinator for three months.

In recent months, Pompeo has made multiple appearances on "Fox & Friends" to discuss the Benghazi hearings and the Iran nuclear deal.

Sen. Perdue doesn't look far for new staff hire

Posted by LegiStorm on Nov. 13, 2015

Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) didn't have to look far for his latest staffer, turning to the niece of his more senior Senate colleague, Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.).

Isabelle Isakson, who has a bachelor's degree in child and family development from the University of Georgia and taught elementary school, has come on board as a deputy scheduler.

"Given her interest in scheduling and her knowledge of the state of Georgia, [Isabelle] stood out among several candidates interviews for the deputy scheduling position, and she was ultimately selected as the best fit for our team," wrote Perdue's communications director, Megan Whittemore, in an email to LegiStorm.

Whittemore said Isakson played no role during the hiring process. As chair of the Senate Ethics Committee, Isakson oversees application of Senate ethics rules, which prohibit all Senate employees from helping get family members on the federal payroll.

Kline staffer leaves office, begins new mission with defense contractor

Posted by Steve Shapiro on Nov. 12, 2015

Rep. John Kline (R-Minn.) has lost one of his entrenched staffers to defense contractor DRS Technologies.

Ryan Silverberg left Kline's office this month after nearly five-and-a-half years with the congressman. He joined in mid-2010 as a military legislative assistant and became a senior legislative associate two years later. Silverberg's new position with DRS is director of legislative affairs.

Silverberg joined Kline after serving as a logistics officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and continued on as a company commander in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve until early 2014.

Kline, a former marine himself, sits on the Military Personnel Subcommittee and the Intelligence, Emerging Threat and Capabilities Subcommittee of the House Armed Services Committee.

About Caught Our Eye

We spend a large part of our days looking at data. Documents often come in by the dozens and hundreds. And while most are boring - how interesting can staring at a phone directory or salary records be, for example? - we find daily reasons for interest, amusement or even concern packed in the documents. So we are launching a new running feature that we call "Caught our Eye."

Longer than tweets but shorter than most blog posts, Caught our Eye items will bring back the interest in reviewing documents and researching people. Some items might bring hard, breaking news. Others will raise eyebrows and lead some into further inquiry. Others might be good for a joke or two around the water cooler. All will enlighten about the people or workings of Capitol Hill.

Caught our Eye items will be published each morning for LegiStorm Pro subscribers. Non-Pro site users will be able to receive the news items a few hours later. In addition to having immediate access to the news, LegiStorm Pro users will have a handy way to search and browse all past items.
